Še en set fotografij z zimskega potepa po Toskani. Tokrat nekaj urbane Toskane.

One more set of photos from winter trip to Tuscany. This time urban part of it. Small medieval villages and towns are scattered around Tuscany. While cruising between hills and fields (post about this part here) we stopped in San Gimignano, Pienza and Siena.

San Gimignano is called medieval Manhattan. Competition between neighbors in middle ages left us 14 tall towers. They don’t have any special intention, but being taller than neighbor’s. There used to be 72 of them. In Summer San Gimignano is overcrowded, but in Winter the town is nice to visit.

Pienza is home town of Pope Pius II from 15th Century. When he became pope, he rebuild it and named it after himself. While being pope, he was using it as holiday destination.

Siena was in rivalry with Firenze during middle ages. This rivalry left us magnificent Cathedral. On Campo Square representatives of city neighborhoods (contradas) compete twice a year in wild horse race (Palio). For eternal glory of their contrada.
